Your child’s feet will grow very quickly in the first 5 years of their life. Proper footwear during this time is very important in order to allow the bones in the feet to grow straight. When your child is just a baby, the bones in the toes are very soft, and shoes and socks that are too tight can restrict these bones from growing properly. In fact, shoes are not necessary for children until they are walking on their own, and even then, they are only needed for walking outside. It is important to also make sure that your child’s shoes are fastened with either laces or Velcro in order to keep the heel from slipping out of the shoe. Parents who have further questions about what shoes their child should be wearing as they grow can consult with a podiatrist for further advice and recommendations.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Dr. Michael D. Garvin of Florida. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

Crystals that form between the joints in the big toe can lead to a condition that is known as gout. It can travel to other parts of the body, and it generally begins with the big toe. It is caused by excess uric acid in the bloodstream and lodges between the joints. It often causes debilitating pain, discomfort, and difficulty walking. Uric acid build-ups can be caused by eating foods that have high levels of purines. These types of foods include shellfish, red meat, excess alcohol, and drinks that have a high sugar content. Additionally, gout attacks may be caused by genetic factors, and it is helpful to take measures that can control these episodes. Gout can possibly be controlled by maintaining a healthy weight, and incorporating an exercise routine into the daily regime. It is important that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can properly diagnose gout, and offer the best treatment solutions for you.

Gout is a painful condition that can be treated. If you are seeking treatment, contact Dr. Michael D. Garvin from Florida. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.

People who unexpectedly twist their foot may experience a sprained ankle, which occurs as a result of overstretching the muscles, tendons and ligaments. The symptoms that often accompany a sprained ankle can include bruising, swelling, and difficulty moving the ankle. People who have weak ankles may be more susceptible to a sprain. It can help to improve ankle strength by performing specific exercises that are designed for the ankles. Additionally, it is a good idea to do warm up and cool down stretches before and after working out. Research has indicated it is beneficial to lose any extra weight in order to lessen the pressure that is exerted on the ankles. There are several treatment options for sprained ankles, and it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can determine which one is the best for you.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact Dr. Michael D. Garvin from Florida. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.
