Foods That Can Cause Gout

If the bottom of your big toe is inflamed and is extremely painful, you may have a condition referred to as gout. Gout is the result of excessive uric acid present in the body, which deposits in the form of crystals in the joints and surrounding areas. It’s commonly caused by a predisposed inherited gene or dietary choices including foods that have elevated purine levels. These triggers include beef, any kind of organ meat, alcohol, and certain types of fruits. Additionally, drinks that have high amounts of fructose may lead to developing this condition, and it’s advised to avoid them. These types of beverages include fruit juices, soda and any other drinks that are sweetened with sugar. If you are suffering from an episode of gout, please consider scheduling a consultation with a podiatrist for additional information and possible treatment options.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Dr. Michael D. Garvin from Florida. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Are The Feet Affected By Obesity?

There are several ailments that may develop concerning the feet when obesity exists. When the body endures additional weight, it’s common to experience blisters, cracked skin on the heels, ankle sprains, and athlete’s foot. Many injuries occur because of damage inflicted on the soft tissue, so it’s important that the feet are protected during daily activities. This may consist of choosing to wear thick socks that serves as insulation against any friction. Pain and discomfort in the feet makes it difficult to exercise, and it often inhibits the desire to stay active. Diabetes can often develop as a result of being overweight, and it’s suggested that checkups of the feet are done regularly to aid in controlling this condition. Please consider scheduling a consultation with a podiatrist for additional information on how obesity can affect the feet

Obesity has become very problematic at this point in time and can have extremely negative effects on the feet. If you’re an obese individual and are concerned about your feet, contact Dr. Michael D. Garvin from Florida. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Obesity and Your Feet

Since your feet are what support your entire weight when standing, any additional weight can result in pain and swelling. Being overweight is one of the main contributors to foot complications.

Problems & Complications

Extra Weight – Even putting on just a few extra pounds could create serious complications for your feet. As your weight increases, your balance and body will shift, creating new stresses on your feet. This uneven weight distribution can cause pain, even while doing the simplest tasks, such as walking.

Diabetes – People who are overweight are at serious risk of developing type-2 diabetes, which has a drastic impact on the health of your feet. As you get older, your diabetes might worsen, which could lead to loss of feeling in your feet, sores, and bruises. You could also become more prone to various infections.

Plantar fasciitis – Pressure and stress that is placed on muscles, joints, and tendons can trigger plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of tissue that forms along the bottom of the foot.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Port St. Lucie, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

How to Prevent Blisters on the Feet

If you see a small area filled with clear fluid on your foot, you may have what is referred to as blister. It’s common for joggers to develop blisters on the feet, and their running is often compromised. Pain and discomfort are often associated with blisters, and the best way to avoid this condition from occurring is to be aware of how to prevent it. It’s important to wear running shoes that fit correctly, and this includes choosing a shoe size that is bigger than shoes that are worn while not running. Additionally, there are socks that are designed specifically for running, and blisters may not form as rapidly when worn. Typically, the best way to treat a blister is to leave it alone, and it will heal on its own. If it bursts and becomes infected, a bandage may be necessary to cover it for protection. Please schedule a consultation with a podiatrist if you would like information about blisters on the feet and how to treat them.

Blisters are prone to making everyday activities extremely uncomfortable. If your feet are hurting, contact Dr. Michael D. Garvin of Florida. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters develop as a result of constantly wearing tight or ill-fitting footwear. This happens due to the constant rubbing from the shoe, which can often lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

How Do Blisters Form?

Blisters on the feet are often the result of constant friction of skin and material, usually by shoe rubbing. Walking in sandals, boots, or shoes that don’t fit properly for long periods of time can result in a blister. Having consistent foot moisture and humidity can easily lead to blister formation.

Prevention & Treatment

It is important to properly care for the affected area in order to prevent infection and ease the pain. Do not lance the blister and use a Band-Aid to provide pain relief. Also, be sure to keep your feet dry and wear proper fitting shoes. If you see blood or pus in a blister, seek assistance from a podiatrist.

Causes of Corns

If you experience a bony knot on your toes or feet, you may have what is referred to as a hard corn. This is generally the result of the friction the feet endure, commonly due to poorly fitting shoes. Corns that appear between the toes often have a soft texture and occur when shoes are worn with a narrow toe area. Both types of corns can be painful and uncomfortable and may need to be treated, depending upon the severity. Choosing to wear shoes that fit correctly will not only feel more comfortable, but will aid in the treatment and prevention of corns. If there are additional foot problems present, such as diabetes, or any type of surgery performed that may have affected the bone structure, it’s important to relay that information to your podiatrist.

If you have any concerns regarding your feet and ankles, contact Dr. Michael D. Garvin of Florida. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Causes of Hammertoe

Hammertoe is a foot condition which affects the toes, causing the joints to become deformed. Choosing to wear shoes that fit tightly is often the cause of this condition, resulting in the toes bending into a forced, abnormal position. The shoes will rub on the toe which causes friction, and corns and calluses will most likely develop. Additionally, medical conditions that presently exist, such as diabetes and arthritis, may contribute to the development of hammertoes. There are treatment options available, including splints to realign the toe and orthotics specifically designed to accommodate the affected toe. A consultation with a podiatrist is advised to learn about choosing proper footwear and advice on how to treat hammertoe.

Hammertoe

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Dr. Michael D. Garvin from Florida. Our doctor will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected toes
  • Development of corns or calluses due to friction
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Contracture of the toes

Causes

Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible

Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur

Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe

Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it

Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used

Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

If you have any questions please contact our offices located in Port St. Lucie, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

What is a Bunion?

A large growth located on the foot at the bottom of the big toe is referred to as a bunion. It appears as an unsightly bony mass and may be caused by a predisposed inherited trait. Wearing high heels may cause the toes to remain in a cramped position for extended periods of time, and this can exacerbate an existing bunion. There are several ways to prevent this condition from occurring, including wearing shoes with a low heel or making sure a supportive feature, such as a strap, is present to prevent the foot from sliding. Additionally, it’s important to wear shoes with ample room to allow the toes to move freely. If you’re experiencing a bunion that’s causing severe pain, a consultation with a podiatrist is advised for possible treatment options.

If you are suffering from bunions, contact Dr. Michael D. Garvin of Florida. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Why Do Bunions Form?

Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary

Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions

How Are Bunions Diagnosed?

Doctors often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your doctor.

How Are Bunions Treated?

  • Refrain from wearing heels or similar shoes that cause discomfort
  • Select wider shoes that can provide more comfort and reduce pain
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain management drugs
  • Orthotics or foot inserts
  • Surgery

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our offices located in Port St. Lucie, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

What is Shockwave Therapy?

If you are experiencing severe pain originating from the Achilles tendon, you may want to consider a treatment known as extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ECSWT). Additionally, it is effective in treating disorders that involve the soft tissue of the ankle and foot. This treatment consists of non-invasive shock wave impulses that are administered to the painful area of the foot, through the use of a machine designed specifically for this reason. There are numerous benefits that can be obtained from having ECSWT performed, some of which promote the tissues to rapidly heal. Additionally, it may generate new blood vessels to form, which also encourages healing. A consultation with a podiatrist is advised for information about ECSWT to determine if this is a treatment option that’s correct for you.

Shockwave therapy is a treatment commonly used to treat various injuries and conditions, particularly plantar fasciitis in the feet. To learn more, consult with Dr. Michael D. Garvin from Florida. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is a new treatment option designed to treat bone conditions such as tennis elbow, shoulder pain, and others. Shockwave therapy uses high intensity sound waves that are directed to the affected tissues of the body with pinpoint accuracy. The effects are very beneficial, leading to a production of collagen fibers, eliminating inflammation.

Who Benefits from Shockwave?

Shockwave is recommended for patients suffering from heel pain and associated problems. Heel pain is a common condition which can be caused by obesity, overexertion, and spending a substantial amount of time on hard floors with your feet exposed and unsupported.

Fast and Easy

The therapy is actually a simple process that can leave patients feeling better the very next day. Shockwave therapy is not as dramatic as it sounds. It enables more blood flow to effected areas, addressing the source of the problem and allowing treatment to last for a long time.

Treatment & Recovery Time

Shockwave treatment will enable your feet to recover quickly. This is especially important since surgery is not required. It is cost effective and does not require the use of anesthesia. This treatment is a better option to surgery, since it is proven safe.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our offices located in Port St. Lucie, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Can Orthotics Help More Than My Feet?

If you are experiencing abnormal walking patterns, you may want to consider wearing orthotics. Orthotics are custom-made inserts that are slipped into your shoes. Generally, an impression of your feet is taken to obtain a perfect fit, preventing any feelings of discomfort. The benefits of wearing orthotics may include keeping the foot stable while performing daily activities and helping to correct debilitating pronation. They’re also beneficial in aiding in conditions such as bunions, corns, and heel pain. It may take some time to get used to your new orthotics, since your feet have been functioning in a certain way for years. Therefore, a gradual increase in wearing them may be recommended. Please consider a consultation with a podiatrist for advice on how you can be measured for custom-made orthotics.

If you are having discomfort in your feet and would like to try orthotics, contact Dr. Michael D. Garvin from Florida. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Are Orthotics?

Orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain but can’t correct serious biomechanical problems in your feet.

Over-the-Counter Inserts

Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct overarched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.

Prescription Orthotics

If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you or if you have a more severe foot concern, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high-quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and severe forms of heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.

If you are experiencing minor to severe foot or heel pain, it’s recommended to speak with your podiatrist about the possibilities of using orthotics. A podiatrist can determine which type of orthotic is right for you and allow you to take the first steps towards being pain-free.

If you have any questions please contact our offices located in Port St. Lucie, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Symptoms of Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is a common condition that affects children and is often accompanied by intense pain. When the growth plate in the heel becomes inflamed, often in children that are physically active, this bone disorder can become quite uncomfortable. This is typically the result of a growth spurt that occurs in early puberty, causing the bone in the heel to grow faster than the muscles in the leg. The tendons become less flexible and consequently place excessive pressure on the heel bone. The Achilles tendon becomes tight and may damage the growth plate, thus causing the pain associated with Sever’s disease. Common symptoms of the condition include difficulty in walking, stiffness in the foot in the morning, or a heel that is swollen or red. Treatment can include rest, which is generally effective in reducing pressure on the heel. Eliminating the activities that cause the pain is recommended, in addition to strengthening the leg with proper foot and leg exercises.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see Dr. Michael D. Garvin from Florida. Our doctor can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our offices located in Port St. Lucie, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle injuries.

How Can Wearing High Heels Affect My Feet?

The choice to wear high heels can not only be damaging to the heel, but generally puts pressure on the front of the foot as well. Another part of the foot typically affected may be the Achilles tendon. When high heels are worn frequently, the tendon becomes shortened, and the back of the ankle may feel tight as it strains to be flexible. Arthritis may be a result of damage incurred to the joints of the feet from wearing high heels. Additionally, disorders such as bunions, corns, and a thickening of the nerves between the toes, referred to as Morton’s neuroma, may also be the result of choosing this type of shoe to wear. If you do decide to wear high heels, you can reduce the impact that’s endured by placing protective pads in the shoes. When proper stretches are performed, the foot and ankle will not only feel better, but become stronger.

High heels have a history of causing foot and ankle problems. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact Dr. Michael D. Garvin from Florida. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Effects of High Heels on the Feet

High heels are popular shoes among women because of their many styles and societal appeal.  Despite this, high heels can still cause many health problems if worn too frequently.

Which Parts of My Body Will Be Affected by High Heels?

  • Ankle Joints
  • Achilles Tendon – May shorten and stiffen with prolonged wear
  • Balls of the Feet
  • Knees – Heels cause the knees to bend constantly, creating stress on them
  • Back – They decrease the spine’s ability to absorb shock, which may lead to back pain.  The vertebrae of the lower back may compress.

What Kinds of Foot Problems Can Develop from Wearing High Heels?

  • Corns
  • Calluses
  • Hammertoe
  • Bunions
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Plantar Fasciitis

How Can I Still Wear High Heels and Maintain Foot Health?

If you want to wear high heeled shoes, make sure that you are not wearing them every day, as this will help prevent long term physical problems.  Try wearing thicker heels as opposed to stilettos to distribute weight more evenly across the feet.  Always make sure you are wearing the proper shoes for the right occasion, such as sneakers for exercising.  If you walk to work, try carrying your heels with you and changing into them once you arrive at work.  Adding inserts to your heels can help cushion your feet and absorb shock. Full foot inserts or metatarsal pads are available.
